Teatro continuo. La vita in scena

One year after  Alberto Burri’s Teatro Continuo was brought back to the city of Milan, La Triennale presents the exhibition Teatro Continuo. La vita in scena.

Thanks to the original sketch of the Teatro Continuo, currently preserved, according to Burri’s desire, at Palazzo Albizzini in Città di Castello, and thanks to a series of photographs and videos about the Teatro Continuo, made from the Seventies to date, the exhibition tells the story of the work over time, and evokes the epochal steps of the city hosting it.

Teatro Continuo. La vita in scena is set up in the point of the Triennial more adjacent to the park; it thus establishes a direct reference to its own object.

Built in 1973 in Parco Sempione in Milan on the occasion of the XV Triennale, the Teatro Continuo serves as an optical cone highlighting the scenic and prospective character of the park itself, with which it lives in symbiosis.

A free venue always ready for spontaneous or organized use, it underlies a notion of scene that extends to urban space as a social stage and as a place of continuous events.

The Teatro Continuo also gives centrality to the individual who sets the stage, offering him/her the pleasure of his/her performance; and expresses a utopia, the one that everyone can be the protagonist of his own life every day.

In 1989 the Teatro Continuo is demolished; the memory of that work is still deeply engraved in the citizens’ minds  as well as in a series of photographs taken by artists and photographers such as, among others, Cesare Colombo, Renzo Chiesa, Fabrizio Garghetti, Maria Mulas. In May 2015 the work is restored thanks to the joint efforts of the City of Milan and La Triennale di Milano, recipients of the work, as well as of Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini  Collezione Burri and Nctm Studio Legale.

The process of reconstruction and the renewed presence of the work in its original location are witnessed by a series of photographs by Paola Di Bello, which form a main axis of the exhibition.

To date, the Teatro Continuo shows its vitality in its daily use, both with spontaneous activities and organised shows. Such potential is testified in the exhibition, among other things, by photographs by Giovanni Sabatini and the series by Paolo Sacchi dedicated to the performance project Stage as a social platform about the Theatre, held in April 2016 as part of the XXI Triennale.

The exhibition includes a shot by Florian Zyba, as a result of the involvement of the School of Photography of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in the event.

Teatro Continuo. La vita in scena is a project by Fondazione La Triennale di Milano and nctm e l’arte, with the collaboration of Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri.
